VELscope VX (Oral Cancer Screening)
The VELscope VS is a dental technology that is changing the way that dentists screen for oral cancer. The VELscope is a cordless device that is used to painlessly examine the soft tissues of the mouth for signs of abnormal, pre-cancerous, or cancerous cells. Dr. Daniel A. Burton will shine the VELscope VX blue light onto your tongue, lips, tonsils, lining of the cheeks, and the roof and floor of the mouth. Healthy tissues will appear green and abnormal tissues will appear dark. The VELscope VX is capable of identifying cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions before they are visible to the naked eye. Patients can perform self-examinations between visits for changes in soft tissue textures or the appearance of sores that are persistent or that bleed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I get a VELscope VX screening in Wichita, Kansas?
Absolutely. Everyone should be screened or oral cancer regularly, regardless of age. VELscope is a diagnostic tool that has the potential to save lives.
What should I expect during my VELscope VX screening?
Our dentist will place protective glasses over your eyes before you are screened. Our dentist will then shine the special VELscope VX light into your mouth. The test is painless and will take two minutes or less. If any suspicious tissues are found, Dr. Daniel A. Burton may order a biopsy or brush test for microbiological analysis.
Are there any steps I need to take after my VELscope VX screening?
No. VELscope VX oral cancer screenings do not cause any down time as they are completely noninvasive. We recommend that you return for oral cancer screenings at each dental examination or at least once a year.
